Summary:
Šestine umbrella, seen for countless number of times as the symbol of the city of Zagreb and a part of the Prigorje folk costume. The art of its making is protected as intangible cultural heritage, but is this all we know about it? In this adventurous quest with the folklorist Vido Bagur we will discover that we are not the only ones who are proud of this umbrella! In a picturesque mountain village of Mauterndorf in the Lungau County, Austria, a big feast is being prepared for the Day of Our Lady, the so-called Samsonumzug in which the local people participate wearing the oldest folk costumes of the region and as an obligatory accessory they wear - Šestine umbrella?! Furthermore, besides the famous Zagreb family of umbrella makers, Cerovečki, a Salzburg umbrella maker, Kirchtag, is also making them, while the oldest umbrellas are there, as well as back home, kept in museum collections! So, whose umbrella is it - from Šestine, Prigorje or Austrian? And does it really matter? Will this quest bring a definite answer?
